Simple Device May Offer Alternative to Total Knee Replacement
Spokane, WA-December 7, 2001. David F. Scott, MD is a local orthopaedic surgeon who is one of a few select surgeons across the country who has been approved to perform a new surgical procedure for patients with arthritis of the knee.
The UniSpacer is a small metal disk-like device that relieves pain, and restores the stability and alignment of the knee. Unlike total knee replacement, the technique of implanting the UniSpacer involves no cutting of bone, and no cementing of the implant in the knee, according to Scott. Rather, a small incision is made, and the UniSpacer centers itself in the knee. The procedure takes about an hour, and most patients are able to go home in 24 hours. Not all patients with knee pain are candidates for the UniSpacer implant. The ideal candidate is in good general health, still relatively young and has arthritis in only the medial (inside) part of the knee. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of the UniSpacer, which is available only to a select group of specifically trained surgeons. For additional information, Dr. David Scott can be contacted at Orthopaedic Specialty Clinic of Spokane, 509-466-6393. Get more information on the unispacer! |
