• You will give be given literature specific to your surgery.
  • You will need to arrange a ride home for the day of surgery if you are an outpatient, and for the expected discharge date if you will be an inpatient.
  • Do not eat any solid foods after midnight the night before your surgery.
  • Review the preoperative guidelines for inpatient surgery.
  • Review the preoperative guidelines for outpatient surgery.
  • Please discontinue any medications listed prior to surgery.
  • Aspirin and other Non-Steroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS) can affect the function of the platelets in your blood, and cause bleeding. To reduce the chance of excessive bleeding, please avoid all NSAID medications at least 7 days prior to surgery.
  • Some herb preparations can also cause bleeding, so we also recommend stopping natural herb supplements, including the following: St. John's Wort, Ginko Biloba and Feverfew.
  • Vioxx and Celebrex are two NSAID's that are in a different class of drugs, and should be acceptable before surgery.
  • Tylenol products generally do not affect surgical bleeding, so these can also be taken before surgery.
Knee Hip
You may need assistance with bathing, personal care, yard work, grocery shopping, housework and laundry, pet care, and other activities of daily living. Take the time to make arrangements for help in these areas prior to surgery.

You will need a ride home from the hospital following surgery. You may also want to arrange to have a friend or family member stay with you until you are able to get around safely.

If you will be using crutches or a walker after surgery take a look around your house and remove any item which extends into a walkway that you could trip on. Move bowls for pet food and water to a location where they are not a tripping hazard. Rearrange furniture to give you more room to maneuver with crutches or a walker. Remove all throw rugs. Place items you use regularly within arms reach. Place nightlights in areas you may need lighting in the evening hours.

  • If you are experiencing nausea or if you're not able to get the pain under control, please call our office at (509) 466-6393.
  • Plan to rest the first 24 hours after surgery to minimize bleeding and swelling.
  • Ice and elevate the operated extremity.
  • Follow through with physical therapy no matter what type of surgery you've had.
  • Total Joint Patients: Review the total joint replacement postoperative instructions.
    • Total Knee: Review the preoperative exercises for total knees.
    • Total Hip: Please remember the total hip precautions - the precautions are for the rest of your life, not just immediately after surgery. If you had revision total hip surgery, you must keep the knee immoblizer on for six weeks after surgery. You may have someone else assist you to remove the immobilizer twice a day, so that you may bend your knee. Review the pre-operative exercises for total hips.
  • Rotator Cuff and Total Shoulder Patients: You must stay in a sling until discharged by Dr. Scott.
